Good Vibrations

One critical advantage of your Ellu band is that it vibrates on your wrist to let you know something important is happening with your Ellu network. Below are the times your Ellu band will vibrate: 1. When you send an SOS, it will vibrate. 2. When someone accepts your SOS, it will vibrate. 3. When you receive an SOS, AWARE or PAGER, it will vibrate. 4. When you receive a Friend Finder alert or an Alarm/Timer, it will vibrate. 5. When your phone and band disconnect, it will vibrate. So keep your app open, wear your band and expand...

Smaller than a FITBIT Charge

The prototype band, which is not quite as sleek as the final Ellu band will be, is far smaller and lighter than a Fitbit Charge. The band is only 10mm wide and the weight is less than 2 ounces.  This is in contrast to the Fitbit Charge which is about 7 ounces and has a band that is 22mm wide. The Ellu band is a simple, unimposing device.  We think this is a critical feature to it being used–we designed it to be small, light-weight and comfortable on the user’s wrist. Please note that the prototype differs greatly from our final...

Failure is actually OK

We want to remind you that during our prototype test, we are completely ok with failure. We recognize that the product or app or both might fail in some ways.  In fact, we fully expect it to happen. What we want is to identify those failures so we can fix them.  Please do not hesitate to let us know about any failures you find.  We don’t mind–except if you don’t tell...

Your Ellu Test Band and Water (IMPORTANT!)

VERY IMPORTANT: Your test Ellu Band is not waterproof.  This is because it is a prototype that was built by a 3D printer and it has not been sealed to be waterproof. Once we go to manufacturing, we will make sure all of our bands are certified as waterproof. So, for the test, please keep it...

Safety of a Herd

The Ellu vision includes making college campuses safer for everyone. With widespread use of our Ellu bands and establishment of personal safety networks, the safety net is expanded to cover everyone on  the campus–even those who do not yet participate. Emergencies happen.  If there are bystanders who have an Ellu band, getting help to the emergency location is a quick as the push of a button.  Valuable time is saved through use of our SOS feature. The idea of “Herd Immunity” is generally discussed in the context of vaccinations.  The established theory is that even non-vaccinators stand to benefit...

You Can Now Put Your Phone Down!

Seriously, it’s unhealthy to be tethered to your phone. More and more studies are coming to that conclusion. You need to be able to be “present” in life to enjoy it.  For yoga to be effective, you need to focus without interruptions. Staring into your phone while out at a restaurant is just plain rude.  Some have taken to collecting all phones prior to a dinner party so as to avoid temptation. But still… You might not have a choice but to stay close to your phone. What if you are expecting a doctor to call with a consultation?...

Because It’s Easy to Miss A Call

It’s common to miss a call, especially if you are home relaxing.  Missing a call is not always unintentional–Sometimes to relax, we have to be away from our phones. Distractions are all around us at home.  We get locked into a what we’re doing and may not even know where our phone is. That’s really not a bad thing either.  It can be healthy to unplug. However. There are always calls that we need to answer–even if it is our relaxation time.   A friend might need your help. A family member might have a change of plans that...

Keep Connected with Your Family

Family really matters to me, but I’m not always able to answer my phone. I often get accused of “intentionally” not answering phone calls from family members.  Not true: I am happy to speak to anyone in my family.  It’s the rest of the world I don’t want to answer to. My defenses are pretty simple.  I don’t hear the call.  I can’t reach my phone.  The ringer is off because I don’t want my phone disturbing others.  I’m in no mood to even see who’s calling me now. It’s never the case that I don’t want to connect...

Ellu helps with separation anxiety

It’s hard to send a child off to college.  How can you keep your child in college safe? Ellu would probably not exist but for this concern.  The solution? We began with the idea of building an anxiety-relieving phone-based system to help protect college students. The evolution from that origin has been both gradual and dramatic, turning ideas into reality: An easy to use, intuitive phone app to provide an additional layer of campus safety. An easy to build Personal Safety Network of friends and family. Geo-location for everyone in that network so help can be identified and tracked. Video...
